Présentation de l'éditeur
In this highly original and authoritative book, Peter Eckman takes pulse diagnosis as a common thread that links and integrates the various disciplines of Oriental medicine, and shows that they are in fact related by a common origin several thousand years ago. The text describes the clinical details used in a variety of acupuncture styles, synthesizing them into a coherent whole, and illustrating the usefulness of this model with an extensive presentation of case histories. A fundamental premise of the book is that treatment should be based not only on the current condition of the patient, but even more importantly on their inherent constitution. The description of constitutional pulse diagnosis therefore forms Part 1 of the text, the description of conditional pulse diagnosis forms Part 2 and Part 3 provides more than 30 case histories with pulse analysis, diagnosis and treatment (with outcomes), so that the book will be of utmost practical benefit.
Much of the book consists of new theoretical schemata to organize traditional Oriental medical concepts into a coherent whole - groundbreaking work that will provide fresh insights and deeper understanding to all practitioners of Chinese medicine, especially acupuncturists. It presents a wealth of material that is not commonly available in Indian (Ayurveda), Korean or Chinese medicine, as well as other traditions of Oriental medicine, including the only thorough presentation of Korean Constitutional Acupuncture in English, based on the author's personal study under its originator.

As a graduate from a constitutional acupuncture program who has spent the eight years following studying the pulse, I can say that this book presents a masterful synthesis of what has become a lost art of constitutional pulse reading. I am shocked to see a previous review claim that this book does not offer a depth of expertise on the subject. The reviewer states that she has not read the "other books" on this subject. Well that is because there are none. Pulse diagnosis is taught in an extremely limited manner in non-TCM acupuncture schools, and what little pulse diagnosis is taught, it is not constitutional pulse diagnosis.
In this book, Mr. Eckman draws upon decades of independent study with pulse masters throughout the world. He lays out both the varying techniques used by different systems to arrive at a constitutional diagnosis while also helping the reader to understand the similarities and differences between these systems in terms of diagnosis and treatment strategy.
The reader is then able to arrive at a navigational "position fix" for the constitutional diagnosis by employing multiple systems which conclude the same result, and thus pointing us back towards the deepest truth of Chinese Medicine -- the One.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has studied constitutional acupuncture but felt it difficult to trust their diagnosis, and also to those who believe that constitutional diagnosis is subjective in nature.

What matters about a book like this is content. Is it really a complete guide to acupuncture? Or is it an introduction? Would an expert in Chinese Traditional Medicine find anything of value in this book? Is it merely a regurgitation of other books on the subject? Well, I am no expert on those other books as I have not read so many, but from what I have read, The Compleat Acupuncturist presents a firm foundation in its subject. If you are an expert, you probably wouldn't buy this book because although the breath of scope is there, there is not the depth of information that I'd expect an expert to seek. But again, it's an excellent book for foundational learning. And if you haven't got the foundation, you have nothing.
