The goal of this program is to improve outcomes of surgery using regional anesthesia through monitoring and management of anticoagulation. After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:
1: Determine the relative risk for bleeding associated with various forms of regional anesthesia.
2: Identify the risk factors for bleeding during and after surgical procedures.
3: Prescribe anticoagulant medications based on their mechanisms of action and the type of anesthesia planned.
4: Estimate the length of time a patient should be off anticoagulant therapy before a neuraxial block is performed.
5: Recognize the advantages of thromboelastography and rotational elastometry in measuring coagulability
