Présentation de l'éditeur
In an age when normal birth can still be overtaken by obstetrics, Grantly Dick-Read's philosophy is still as fresh and relevant as it was when he originally wrote this book. He unpicks the root causes of women's fears and anxiety about pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding with overwhelming heart and empathy. As one of the most influential birthing books of all time, Childbirth Without Fear is essential reading for all parents-to-be, childbirth educators, midwives and obstetricians!
This definitive reissue includes the full text of the fourth edition, the last completed by Grantly Dick-Read before his death in 1959, and The Autobiography of Grantly Dick-Read, compiled from his writings.
With a foreword by Ina May Gaskin.

My mother gave me this book when I was expecting my 2nd child. I loved it. It was my bible for the 9 months of pregnancy. This book helped me to decrease my labor time by over 80%. I would highly encourage any new mothers who are afraid to read this (but cover up the cover before you give it to them). This book, even though written by a man, still today is a guide to natural childbirth and helping a woman naturally through the great miracle of humanity. Once you read it, it requires commitment and dedication to the principles it teaches, but I can tell you it is very worth the effort. Working with your body, instead of fighting it, is the fundamental principle. A must read for any woman expecting. Just cover the front cover with paper, that is if you want the expectant mother to read it. ~KS

I love all things Gaskins and Simkins and Bradley and doula and midwifey. I am studying to be a doula and have three young children, two whom I birthed at home and one in a hospital un-medicated. I was hoping to purchase this book to add to my collection (including Davis' Heart and Hands, most of Gaskins' works, Myles' Midwife Textbook, Birthing From Within, The Birth Partner and you get the idea.) However, I refuse to buy this edition because of the cover photo. Now when this photo first came out, I read all about the woman pictured birthing and looked at all the pictures, so I know the context of it. Yet, the picture is horrendous. She actually looks like she is in absolute agony. I know she's supposed to be a roaring lion bringing her child out, but honestly, it is hideous. If you want to promote natural childbirth, you don't use this photo. It pains me to even look at it. And, of course, she is gorgeous, I'm not knocking her birth or her beauty or anything about her. It's not about her, or the book content or even the photography. It's about featuring this isolated moment that does not seemingly reflect the idea of eliminating fear. Where I a first-time mother and someone handed me this and said, "Here, this will reduce your fears". I would take one look at it and I would think them a bit mad. Actually, more like crazy-go-nuts. Please publishers, do a quick re-print with a different photo. Please.
