No ICU textbook on the market stands clearly apart from the others, but I thought this one was as good as any. Some of Rippe's content is getting stale, although the toxicology section remains supreme. Civetta's chapters can go on forever, although the surgical content is superior there. Vincent's chapters are tight and the content is reasonably current. An acceptably low fraction of the chapters have been outsourced to trainees.

I'm not a big reader of textbooks, and yes I'd rather read something that will help me manage my patients clinically like uptodate.
Is it more like Washington Manual of Medicine vs Harrison's Textbook of Internal Medicine?
It is a combination of both. It's easy enough that you can actually read one chapter a day unlike Harrison's and has a good balance of important information on pathophysiology and the present standard of care.
Jean Louis-Vincent makes this book an easy read. He does reviews for NEJM for certain CCM topics, the chapters are concise and probably a summary(yes it is shorter) of the present guidelines without missing important details.
