The goal of this program is to improve sedation practices and protocols for patients in the neurologic intensive care unit (ICU). After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:
1: Preserve intellectual status and autonomy in patients undergoing sedation.
2: Limit unnecessary use of sedation.
3: Assess the mental status of a sedated or intubated patient.
4: Prevent delirium and other side effects associated with sedation.
5: Identify cases in which dexmedetomidine may be superior to a narcotic or traditional sedative.
